Luxury tours of London — the car, the guide, or the access?

London’s luxury tours sell one of three things — a special car, a better guide, or a door that’s normally shut. A vintage Rolls-Royce starts around £360 for two hours. Here’s what each costs and which is worth paying for.

What luxury tours of London actually sell

Strip away the marketing and a luxury tour of London is one of three things. The car — a restored vintage Rolls-Royce or a panoramic black cab, where the vehicle is half the point. The guide — a Blue Badge driver-guide who holds the country’s top guiding qualification and drives you in their own car. The access — an after-hours visit or a castle that only opens a few weeks a year.

Most “VIP” listings bundle one of these with hotel pick-up. Knowing which one you are paying for is the quickest way to tell a good luxury tour from an ordinary one with a nicer price.

Chauffeur, cabbie or driver-guide — who is doing the talking?

This is the single biggest difference between tours at the same price.

  • A licensed cabbie has passed the Knowledge, the exam that requires memorising London street by street. Expect anecdote and local knowledge rather than dates and dynasties — see our black cab tours guide.
  • A Blue Badge driver-guide is a fully qualified guide who also drives. The Guild’s 2026–27 rates start at £530 for a half day and £760 for a full day; vehicle size varies, so ask how many seats. Details on our Blue Badge guides page.
  • A chauffeur is a professional driver. Some countryside listings say “English-speaking driver” — that is a promise about the language, not about the guiding. Lovely for getting from village to village; pair it with a local guide at the far end if history matters.

What it costs per head

Private vs shared — what does it cost per head?

Private tours are priced per group, shared tours per person. Slide the group size to see when private stops being a luxury.

Private tour (whole group)—
Shared tour (per person)—

The shared comparison is the live-guided vintage open-top bus — the nearest thing to a classic-car tour at a shared price. For a couple, any private car costs several times more per head; that’s the price of the occasion. For four or more in one vehicle the gap closes quickly — and a £420 private countryside day split four ways is about £105 each, not far off a coach seat with entry.

VIP access worth paying for

After hours at the Tower. The evening tour with a Yeoman Warder that ends at the Ceremony of the Keys costs about £159 a head and holds 4.9★ from 79 reviews. If you’d rather see only the ceremony, Historic Royal Palaces sells tickets itself for £10 — online only, released in monthly batches, up to six per applicant, and bookings made by tour operators are cancelled. More options on our private Tower and Westminster page.

Highclere Castle. The private round trip from London is the easy part. The castle opens to the public only on set dates — in 2026, a summer season from 12 July to 3 September (closed Fridays and Saturdays) and Christmas tours from 3 to 6 December — and tickets must be pre-booked with the castle. Check those dates before you book the car; see Downton Abbey and Highclere tours for the shared versions.

Downton country by black cab. A nine-hour private black cab tour of the Oxfordshire filming locations runs from about £939 and is rated 4.9★ from 22 reviews — niche, expensive, and much loved by the people who book it.

A private countryside day

The best value in “luxury” is often outside London. A customisable private day to Stonehenge and Bath, or round the Cotswolds villages, starts from about £420–£550 for the car in our feed — less per hour than the Rolls, and you stop where you like. Our private Stonehenge, Bath and Cotswolds page compares the listings and the DIY train routes.

Questions people ask

How much is a Rolls-Royce tour of London?
The vintage Rolls-Royce tour on GetYourGuide starts from about £360 for two hours in our partner feed today. It is a private booking, so open the listing to see exactly how many passengers that price covers on your date. For comparison, a two-hour black cab tour from an independent operator starts at £185.
Is a chauffeur the same as a tour guide?
Not necessarily. A licensed London cabbie has passed the Knowledge, and a Blue Badge driver-guide holds the top guiding qualification and drives their own car. A chauffeur’s job is the driving; some give excellent commentary, some none. If you want a tour rather than a ride, ask who is talking before you book.
What is the best luxury private tour in London?
For a celebration, the vintage Rolls-Royce — it is the best-reviewed luxury car tour in our feed. For seeing the most of London in comfort, a four-hour panoramic black cab. For the best guiding, a Blue Badge driver-guide at £530 for a half day or £760 for a full day under the Guild’s 2026–27 rates.
Can a private driver take us to Highclere Castle or the Cotswolds?
Yes — private transfers to Highclere and customisable Cotswolds or Stonehenge days start from about £420–£550 in our feed. Highclere only opens on set dates (summer 2026 ran 12 July to 3 September, Christmas tours 3–6 December) and tickets must be pre-booked separately.
Is there a VIP tour of the Tower of London?
The closest thing is an after-hours visit with a Yeoman Warder that ends at the Ceremony of the Keys, from about £159 a head and rated 4.9★. The ceremony itself costs £10 if you book it yourself through Historic Royal Palaces, but tickets are released monthly, limited to six per person and go fast.
Do we need to tip a chauffeur?
Tipping isn’t obligatory in the UK. If the day was excellent, 10% or £20–£40 for a half day is a generous thank-you. On a short car tour, a thank-you and a good review are perfectly acceptable; on a long countryside day, the driver has earned something extra.
