Two kinds of private Harry Potter tour

“Private Harry Potter tour” means two quite different things in London, and it’s worth knowing which you’re after before you book.

  1. A private tour of the London filming locations, almost always by black cab. A licensed cabbie collects you from your hotel and drives you between the places that appear in the films or inspired them — King’s Cross and Platform 9¾, the Millennium Bridge, the Thames route of the broomstick flight, the old City — with photo stops. Three to four hours, or a full day that mixes in the classic sights.
  2. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour with a private transfer. The Studio is at Leavesden, north-west of London. A private package bundles your Studio ticket with a car there and back, so you skip the train and shuttle bus.

The cab tours are where the “private” really matters — you get the driver to yourselves. The Studio packages are mostly about convenience: the Studio itself is the same for everyone.

What happens on a Harry Potter black cab tour

Routes vary by driver, but the format is the same: you’re collected from your hotel and driven through the London locations in a loop, parking up for photo stops and short walks where a cab can’t go. Expect King’s Cross and Platform 9¾, the riverside sights along the route of the broomstick flight, and the City’s older streets, with the classic sights — Westminster, St Paul’s, the Tower — filling the gaps. Commentary comes from the front seat through the cab’s intercom. The longer full-day version adds more of the classic London tour, so it suits a mixed group where not everyone has read the books.

What a private cab costs per head

Private vs shared — what does it cost per head?

Private tours are priced per group, shared tours per person. Slide the group size to see when private stops being a luxury.

Shared tour (per person)—

Example prices from our partner feed; private prices usually cover up to 5 people in a cab or 8–15 on foot — check the cap on the booking page.

Black Taxi Tours of London — 21 Oct 2026

The shared comparison is the most-reviewed Harry Potter walking tour in London, at about £20 a head. For two adults a private cab costs four to eight times as much each. For a family of five sharing one cab, a three- to four-hour Harry Potter cab at around £318 comes to about £64 each — door to door, seated, and with a driver who answers every question your nine-year-old can think of.

Studio Tour: private car or the train?

The Studio is easier to reach than the packages suggest. Direct trains from London Euston to Watford Junction take about 20 minutes, and Oyster cards are valid. The Studio’s own electric shuttle bus takes about 15 minutes, runs at least every 30 minutes from 9:20, and is included in your entry ticket. If you’re driving, parking is free.

What you pay on the DIY route is the Studio ticket — £58.50 for adults, £47 for children aged 5–15, £188 for a family ticket, under-fours free in 2026 (rising to £61 for adults in 2027) — plus the train fare. A private transfer earns its premium when you’re four or more, staying far from Euston, travelling with small children, or simply don’t want to watch the clock for the last bus back.

Whichever way you go, book the Studio ticket early, especially for school holidays. Our Warner Bros. Studio Tour guide compares every package.

Which one should you book?

  • Families of four to six, first trip: the three- to four-hour Harry Potter black cab, then the Studio another day by train.
  • Superfans with a full day: the eight-hour cab, ideally split between five.
  • Couples: a shared Harry Potter walking tour at around £20 each, then the Studio.
  • Mixed groups where not everyone is a fan: a classic black cab tour — ask the driver to add King’s Cross and Leadenhall Market.
  • Young children: see our private family tours for shorter formats and bikes with child seats.

Questions people ask

How much is a private Harry Potter tour in London?
In our partner feed, a three- to four-hour private Harry Potter black cab tour with hotel pick-up starts from about £318, and a full eight-hour Harry Potter and London day by cab from about £699. Both are private bookings for the cab; check the listing for how many passengers the price covers. A Studio Tour package with a private transfer starts from about £170.
Does a private black cab tour include the Warner Bros. Studio?
No — the London cab tours cover filming locations in the city, such as King’s Cross and the Thames, not the Studio in Leavesden. For the Studio you need a separate package with a private or hotel transfer, or the train from Euston plus the Studio’s own shuttle bus.
How do I get to the Harry Potter Studio without a tour?
Take a direct train from London Euston to Watford Junction — about 20 minutes, and Oyster cards are valid. The Studio’s shuttle bus takes about 15 minutes, runs at least every 30 minutes from 9:20, and is included in your Studio ticket. Adult tickets are £58.50 in 2026, children 5–15 £47, under-fours free.
Is a private transfer to the Studio worth it?
For a family of four or more, often yes — no trains to catch with tired children, door-to-door both ways and your Studio ticket bundled in. For two adults staying near Euston, the train is far cheaper and nearly as quick. Free parking at the Studio also makes a hire car or pre-booked taxi an option.
Is a Harry Potter cab tour good for kids?
Yes, if they’ve seen the films. Children sit down between stops, the driver tailors the patter to them, and the photo stops — Platform 9¾, the Millennium Bridge — are the bits they remember. Keep it to the three- to four-hour version for under-tens.
Can I visit Platform 9¾ for free?
Yes. The luggage trolley in the wall at King’s Cross station is free to photograph; there’s usually a queue, and the shop next to it sells a professional photo if you want one. Almost every Harry Potter tour, private or shared, stops here.
