Abbey Road is a short walk from St John’s Wood Tube station and costs nothing. Wait for a gap in the traffic — it’s a working road.

Walk or black cab: which Beatles tour?

A Beatles tour in London is a choice between price and comfort. Walking tours cost about £20–£49 a head and stick to two clusters — Abbey Road in St John’s Wood, and Soho and Mayfair for Savile Row, the studios and the clubs. Private black cab tours cost from about £265 per cab, collect you from your hotel and link the clusters in one go, often adding the band members’ homes and other rock landmarks.

The Beatles walks

The classic Beatles walk is the one led by the author of Guide to the Beatles London, sold on GetYourGuide for about £20. His public walks run on set days: the In My Life walk on Tuesdays and Saturdays from Marylebone station, the Magical Mystery Tour walk on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from Tottenham Court Road, and a Rock and Roll walk on Fridays. Check the listing for which walk you’re booking — the Abbey Road one is the one most people want.

The Magical Mystery Tour walk on our list (4.9★) packs Abbey Road, Savile Row and Trident Studios into two hours for about £49. If you’d rather cover more ground without a cab, the Beatles e-bike tour reaches the same spots in three hours.

Private Beatles and rock’n’roll cabs

For a family, a private cab can cost about the same per head as two walks — see the maths on our black cab tours page. The Rock ’n’ Roll Beatles cab is the one we’d book first: 79 reviews, all perfect, and a route that goes beyond the Beatles to Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Freddie Mercury. The 30-site Beatles taxi is the most thorough on the band alone, including Trident Studios and the homes of John, Paul and Ringo.

The places that matter

  • Abbey Road crossing, NW8 — the cover of Abbey Road (1969). Grade II listed since December 2010. A few minutes’ walk from St John’s Wood station (Jubilee line); the studio has a live crossing webcam.
  • 3 Savile Row — site of the rooftop concert in January 1969. Apple Corps has bought the building back and plans a seven-floor Beatles attraction there, due in 2027.
  • Trident Studios, Soho — on most of the longer walks and cabs.
  • The homes — John, Paul and Ringo’s London addresses feature on the 30-site taxi and the tailored cab.

Getting the Abbey Road photo

The crossing is a working zebra crossing on a busy road, so the famous four-across photo needs patience and a friend on the pavement. Let cars through between attempts, don’t stand still in the road, and expect other fans doing exactly the same. Abbey Road Studios runs a live crossing webcam: wave from the crossing and you can find your footage later. The studio’s official shop opens Monday to Saturday 9:30–17:30 and Sunday 10:00–17:00.

Which to choose

  • Solo or a couple: the £20 walk, then a second walk in Soho if you’re hooked.
  • Family of four or five: a private cab from about £265–£320 per cab works out at £55–£80 each — hotel pick-up, no Tube, no tired legs.
  • Rock fans beyond the Beatles: a rock’n’roll cab, or combine with film and TV location tours and Camden’s music scene on our street art page.

Questions people ask

What is the best Beatles tour in London?
On foot, the Beatles and Abbey Road walk led by the author of a well-known Beatles London guidebook has the most reviews — 4.7★ from almost 700, about £20. The Magical Mystery Tour walk, rated 4.9★, adds Savile Row and Trident Studios. By cab, the Rock ’n’ Roll Beatles private black cab tour is rated 5.0★ from 79 reviews. All three cover Abbey Road.
How much is a Beatles tour in London?
Shared Beatles walks cost about £20–£49 per person on GetYourGuide today. A Beatles e-bike tour starts at about £57. Private Beatles taxi tours run from about £265 to £398 per cab for three to four hours — for up to the cab’s capacity, so for a family of four or five they work out at roughly £55–£100 each.
Can you go inside Abbey Road Studios?
Abbey Road is a working studio, and tours stop outside — at the gates and the famous zebra crossing. The studio runs an official shop and a live crossing webcam you can wave to and check later. The crossing itself was given Grade II listed status in December 2010, the first zebra crossing to be listed.
How do I get to the Abbey Road crossing?
Take the Jubilee line to St John’s Wood; Abbey Road Studios says it’s a few minutes’ walk from the station, and the 139 and 189 buses stop outside. The crossing is a real crossing on a busy road — take turns, don’t stop in the middle, and let the traffic through between photos.
Where was the Beatles' rooftop concert?
On the roof of the Apple Corps building at 3 Savile Row, Mayfair, in January 1969 — the band’s last public performance. Apple Corps has bought the building back and plans to open it as a seven-floor Beatles attraction in 2027, according to the Museums Association. Until then, tours stop outside.
Are there other rock and music tours in London?
Yes. Rock’n’roll taxi tours cover Hendrix, Bowie, Amy Winehouse, the Rolling Stones and Freddie Mercury sites, and one guarantees a glass-roofed cab. On foot, Free Tours by Foot runs a pay-what-you-like Rock n’ Roll walk, and Beatles walks also run a Rock and Roll walk on Fridays. Camden’s music history is covered on our street art and Camden page.
