Which London walking tour should you book?

A London walking tour is the cheapest way to get a real guide: most shared walks cost £15–£35 a head and last around two hours. The city’s centre is compact enough that a good guide can take you from a medieval church to a Victorian murder site to a Banksy-era wall in an afternoon — and the best walks are themed, so pick the story you care about first.

Royal, history and the big sights

Royal London is where most people start, and for good reason: Westminster packs a thousand years into a square mile. Expect the Abbey, Parliament, Horse Guards and Buckingham Palace, timed for the Changing of the Guard. Churchill and WWII walks, medieval walks from the Tower and even Brutalist architecture walks cover the rest. The full comparison is on our royal and history walks page.

Ripper, ghosts and dark London

Jack the Ripper walks are London’s most popular evening tour. They are run by several competing companies, so the scorecard on our Jack the Ripper page matters more than the price, which only varies by a few pounds. For something less grim, see ghost tours, including a comedy horror bus that’s mostly sitting down.

Harry Potter, film and music

The Harry Potter walk is the most-reviewed walking tour in London — over 22,000 reviews on one listing alone. It covers filming locations and the places that inspired the books, and it’s no substitute for the Studio Tour in Leavesden. See our Harry Potter walks guide. Beatles walks around Abbey Road and Soho are quieter and more detailed; Ted Lasso fans head to Richmond.

Pubs, street art and the East End

Two themes that show you the London Londoners use: a historic pub walk through the City’s taverns — some rebuilt straight after the Great Fire of 1666 — and a street art walk in Shoreditch and Brick Lane, where the walls keep changing. Hungry? Food tours include Brick Lane and Brixton.

Shared, free or private?

  • Shared paid walks (£15–£35) — fixed time, fixed meeting point, a guaranteed guide; group size varies by listing, so check it. Best value for one or two people.
  • Tip-based free tours — the same format with tips collected at the end. Groups can be large; see how free tours work.
  • Private guides — from £229 for a half day under the Guild’s 2026–27 rates, for your whole group. Worth it from about four people, or if you want your own route: see private walking tours.

Questions people ask

What is the best walking tour in London?
For a first visit, a Westminster walk — Abbey, Parliament, Horse Guards and Buckingham Palace — gives you the most of London’s story in one go. After that it depends on what you love. Jack the Ripper is the most popular evening walk, Harry Potter the most-reviewed walk in the city, and a street art walk in Shoreditch shows you a London that bus tours skip entirely.
How much does a walking tour in London cost?
Shared walks on GetYourGuide mostly cost £15–£35 a person today; themed small-group walks such as Ted Lasso in Richmond run to about £64. London Walks, the long-running independent, charges £20 for adults. Tip-based free tours cost what you choose to give. A private Blue Badge guide starts at £229 for a half day for your whole group.
How long are London walking tours?
Most run two to two and a half hours and cover two to three kilometres with stops. “See 30 sights” marathons last around five hours with a break. Pub tours run about three and a half hours, and bar crawls go on late. If you have mobility concerns, choose a two-hour walk with a central start and check the listing for stairs and cobbles.
Do London walking tours run in the rain?
Almost always. London walks are planned on the assumption that it will rain at some point — Sandemans, for one, says its free tour runs “rain, hail or shine”. Don’t expect a refund for a shower; check the listing’s cancellation window instead. Bring a compact umbrella or a hooded jacket, and if heavy rain is forecast, a pub walk that ducks indoors is the kinder choice.
Are there walking tours in German or other languages?
Yes. The big Jack the Ripper and Harry Potter walks run German and French departures, and there’s a German-language highlights walk through Mayfair, Soho and the West End. Free-tour companies also run some Spanish departures. For any other language, a private Blue Badge guide is the reliable option.
Should I book a walking tour in advance?
For popular evening walks — Ripper, ghost and pub tours — and for weekends in summer, yes: small-group departures sell out. Daytime Westminster walks usually have space a day or two ahead. Most platform listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking early costs little.
