How much is a London bike tour, and what do you get?

A guided London bike tour costs about £39–£65 a head on the platforms, lasts three to three and a half hours, and includes the bike, a helmet and a guide. The two biggest operators start near Waterloo, and a typical route covers in one morning what would take a day on foot: Westminster, Buckingham Palace, the royal parks, Trafalgar Square and, on longer routes, St Paul’s and the City.

The two names you’ll see most are these. The London Bicycle Tour Company runs from a base near Waterloo (its tour and hire centre is on Kennington Road) and is best known for its Gold Classic tour, offered in English and seven other languages. Fat Tire Tours meets at its office on Mepham Street, by Waterloo station, and runs royal-parks and “secrets” routes plus e-bike tours. Both sell direct and through GetYourGuide.

Platform or direct: which is cheaper?

It varies. The London Bicycle Tour Company lists its Gold Classic at £49.95 an adult direct, while GetYourGuide shows it from about £40 today — a rare case where the platform undercuts the operator, probably thanks to a promotion. Fat Tire’s Royal London tour is £42 direct, the same as the similarly named Royal London highlights listing on GetYourGuide. Children aged 10–17 pay £37.95 for the Gold Classic direct. Fat Tire offers free changes and a full refund up to 24 hours before if you book direct; most GetYourGuide listings have a similar 24-hour policy.

Which London bike tour should you book?

  • First time in London: the Gold Classic or the Grand half-day — the most sights per hour.
  • Been before: the hidden-landmarks route through the City and East End.
  • With children: the parks-and-palaces morning ride (mostly in the parks), or a private family tour so the kids set the pace. Fat Tire’s baby seats, tandems and trailers are free if booked ahead.
  • Unsure about fitness: an e-bike tour; riders must be 14+ on Fat Tire’s e-bikes.
  • History first, bike second: a royal history walk goes inside courtyards and churches a bike can’t.

What to know before you ride

  • Meeting points: both main operators start near Waterloo — Fat Tire at 135a Mepham Street, SE1. Your booking confirmation gives the exact spot.
  • Helmets: not a legal requirement in the UK; tour companies provide them.
  • Weather: tours run in the rain. Bring a waterproof; Fat Tire sells ponchos.
  • Pace: 13 km in three and a half hours, as on the Gold Classic, is gentle riding. The hard part is London traffic, not distance.

If you’d rather see the city from the water, the Regent’s Canal boat to Camden passes along the same towpath you can also ride.

Questions people ask

How much is a bike tour in London?
On GetYourGuide, shared London bike tours of three to three and a half hours cost from about £39 to £65 a head, with bike and helmet included. E-bike tours start at about £56. Booked direct, the London Bicycle Tour Company’s Gold Classic is £49.95 an adult and £37.95 for 10–17s; Fat Tire’s Royal London tour starts at £42. Private tours start at about £265 on GetYourGuide and £300 direct with Fat Tire.
Is cycling in London safe for tourists?
Guided routes use parks and cycle paths where they can — the London Bicycle Tour Company says about 40% of its Gold Classic route is on cycle paths — and the guide leads you across junctions. You still need to be confident on a bike in traffic. Helmets aren’t legally required in the UK, but tour companies provide them.
Can children do a London bike tour?
Yes, with limits. The London Bicycle Tour Company’s open tours take riders from 10. Fat Tire offers baby seats, tandems, trailers, tag-alongs and kids’ bikes at no extra charge if booked in advance, and its smallest bikes suit riders from 100 cm tall. For younger children, a private family tour is easier.
Do London bike tours run in the rain?
Fat Tire says all its tours run rain or shine and sells ponchos at its office. Expect the same from most operators; if the weather is truly dangerous they’ll reschedule. On platform bookings, free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead is common, so check the forecast the day before.
Is an e-bike tour worth it?
If anyone in the group is unfit, older or nervous on hills, yes — London is mostly flat but three hours is a long time in the saddle. An e-bike tour costs roughly £15–£20 more than a pedal tour. Fat Tire only lets riders aged 14 and over upgrade to an e-bike.
Can I just hire a bike and ride around London?
Yes — Santander Cycles, the city’s hire bikes, cost £1.65 per 30 minutes on a pedal bike or £3 on an e-bike. A Day Pass from £3.50 gives unlimited 60-minute rides for 24 hours, plus £1 per e-bike journey. Hire through the Santander Cycles app or at a docking station terminal.
What about beer bikes and party bikes?
Pedal-powered bar bikes are a stag-and-hen night out rather than a sightseeing tour, and we don’t compare them here. If what your group really wants is a few pints with some history thrown in, a guided pub tour covers the drinking with better stories, and nobody has to pedal home. See our pub tours and crawls page.
