Which Jack the Ripper tour in London is best?

A Jack the Ripper tour is a two-hour evening walk through Whitechapel and Spitalfields, following the 1888 murders and the police investigation that never named a killer. Every company walks broadly the same ground, so the choice is about format: how big the group is, whether the guide uses images, and if you need to book. Here’s how the main operators compare.

Platform prices are the “from” prices in our partner feed today; operator prices and times are from their own websites. None of the operators publishes a hard group-size cap for its public walks, so if crowding worries you, a private guide is the only guarantee.

The operators in brief

The Original Jack the Ripper Walking Tour is the one most visitors book, and its review count — nearly 9,000 on GetYourGuide alone — reflects that. It’s a straightforward guided walk, and German- and French-language versions run under the same name.

Ripper-Vision is the multimedia option: the guide carries a projector that throws large images — crime-scene photographs and views of the 1888 city — onto walls along the route. It brings the 1888 city alive in a way storytelling can’t, but some of the photographs are genuinely upsetting, and the operator advises parental guidance.

London Walks is the only one here you can simply turn up for: 7.30pm every night outside Tower Hill station, £20 for adults, with a Saturday 3pm matinee. Guides carry the white London Walks leaflet so you know you’ve found the right one.

Discovery Tours sells its walk direct, at £15, from Aldgate East at 7pm on selected nights. It makes a point of limiting numbers and uses printed photographs and facsimile police handbills rather than a projector.

Jack the Ripper tours in German and French

The Original tour runs dedicated foreign-language walks, and they’re among the best-reviewed Ripper tours in London. The German-language tour (“Jack the Ripper Tour London auf Deutsch”) costs about £22 for two hours, rated 4.7★ from more than 2,700 reviews. The French-language tour is the same price and length, rated 4.8★ from more than 1,600. Both are booked on GetYourGuide. For any other language, book a private Blue Badge guide.

A note on the subject

Behind the brand are five women murdered in Whitechapel between August and November 1888: Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly. The better tours spend as much time on who they were and on the poverty of the East End as on the killer, and treat the crime-scene images with care. If a listing sells itself on gore, it’s telling you what kind of evening it will be.

Making a night of it

Evening Ripper walks finish by about half past nine in the East End, within reach of Brick Lane’s curry houses and the bars of Shoreditch — our street art and Shoreditch tours cover the area by day. If you’d rather your history came with drinks, compare the pub-stop Ripper tour with the options on our pub tours and crawls page. And if your group wants scares rather than true crime, our ghost tours page compares the Ghost Bus, haunted walks and the Tower after dark.

Questions people ask

Which Jack the Ripper tour is best?
For most people, the Original Jack the Ripper Walking Tour on GetYourGuide — about £22, two hours, 4.7★ from nearly 9,000 reviews. If you want images rather than imagination, the Ripper-Vision tour projects photographs onto the streets. If you’d rather not book, London Walks runs every night at 7.30pm from Tower Hill and you just turn up. For a smaller group, Discovery Tours says it limits numbers.
How much does a Jack the Ripper tour cost?
Between about £15 and £29 per adult. On GetYourGuide, walks list from about £16 to £22, and the version with historic pub stops is about £29 (drinks are usually extra). Booked direct, London Walks charges £20 (£15 students and over-65s, £5 children) and Discovery Tours’ walk is £15. Private tours cost more and are priced per group.
Is there a Jack the Ripper tour in German or French?
Yes. The Original Jack the Ripper tour runs a German-language version — “Jack the Ripper Tour London auf Deutsch” — at about £22 for two hours, rated 4.7★ from more than 2,700 reviews, and a French-language version at the same price, rated 4.8★ from more than 1,600. Both are booked on GetYourGuide like the English walk.
Where do Jack the Ripper tours start?
In or near Whitechapel, in the evening. London Walks meets outside Tower Hill Underground station at 7.30pm. Ripper-Vision starts outside the Whitechapel Gallery by exit 3 of Aldgate East station, and Discovery Tours meets outside exit 1 of Aldgate East. Platform tours give the exact meeting point on your ticket — check it, because several groups gather in the same streets.
Are Jack the Ripper tours suitable for children?
Some are, with care. London Walks sells £5 children’s tickets; Ripper-Vision warns that some images may upset people and advises parental guidance; and at least one of the GetYourGuide walks is billed as adults only. The subject is the murder of five women, so judge by your child rather than their age.
What do you actually see on a Ripper tour?
Mostly modern streets. Very little of 1888 Whitechapel survives, so the guides rely on storytelling, old photographs and maps — or, on Ripper-Vision, projected images. Expect to stop at the sites linked to the murders, and hear about the police investigation and the living conditions of the East End.
