Who are Golden Tours?

Golden Tours is a London tour company established in 1984, family run, and the city’s partner in the international Gray Line association — hence “Golden Tours/Gray Line London” on booking sites. It says it has carried more than 10 million guests. It runs its own hop-on hop-off buses, coach day trips to places like Stonehenge, Bath and the Cotswolds, private tours, airport transfers, and transport packages to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, where it calls itself a preferred partner. On GetYourGuide it supplies some of the most-reviewed London products of all.

The hop-on hop-off bus

Golden Tours runs three colour-coded routes:

  • Blue — Classic Tour. Central landmarks: the London Eye, Big Ben, St Paul’s, the Shard and the Tower of London.
  • Red — Essential Tour. Central and north London: Covent Garden, Westminster Abbey, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and King’s Cross.
  • Orange — Museum Tour. The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and V&A, plus the Royal Albert Hall, Harrods and Buckingham Palace.

The big difference from rivals is the commentary. Golden Tours says English-speaking live guides work on many of its open-top buses, and that a full live-guided loop leaves the London Eye stop on Belvedere Road on the hour. Every bus also carries audio in 12 languages and a kids’ channel. Big Bus and The Original Tour have both moved to recorded commentary on their day routes, so if a person on the microphone matters, this is the bus.

The weak spot is frequency. In summer and school holidays the Red and Blue routes run every 20 minutes and the Orange every 30; in winter the Blue drops to every 30 minutes and Red and Orange to every hour. The 24-hour ticket includes a river cruise and two free walking tours; the 48- and 72-hour tickets include a hop-on hop-off boat ride. We couldn’t find a current “free extra 24 hours” offer on Golden Tours’ own pages, although some platform listing titles still mention one — check what your ticket includes.

Christmas lights and night tours

Golden Tours’ Christmas Lights London by Night tour runs daily from 6 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, boarding at the London Eye (Belvedere Road), Victoria (Buckingham Palace Road) or Green Park, with a live English-speaking guide. It lasts 75–90 minutes and refunds up to 24 hours before. The year-round London by Night open-top tour is 90 minutes. Compare both on our Christmas lights and night tours pages.

Day trips and the Harry Potter coach

Golden Tours’ coach day trips cover the classic multi-stop days — Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath in one long day, for example. Its Warner Bros. Studio Tour package with return transport on a branded coach has more than 20,000 reviews on GetYourGuide at 4.7★. Before you book a coach, read our Harry Potter studio guide and Stonehenge tours page, which compare the train alternatives.

Booking and commission

Booking direct, Golden Tours’ hop-on hop-off tickets can be cancelled or amended for a full refund until midnight UK time the night before. Its GetYourGuide hop-on hop-off listing offers free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. We earn a commission on bookings made through GetYourGuide and Headout links on this page; we have no agreement with Golden Tours directly.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Live English-speaking guides on many hop-on hop-off buses.
  • Often the cheapest hop-on hop-off ticket in London.
  • One company for city buses, night tours, day trips and the studio coach.
  • Excellent platform record on the Harry Potter and day-trip products.

Cons

  • Hourly buses on two of three routes in winter.
  • Hop-on hop-off ratings are middling on GetYourGuide (3.9★), better on Headout (4.4★).
  • Prices on its own site change constantly, so the “from” price moves.

Verdict: 3.8 / 5

Golden Tours is the best choice in London if you want a live guide on a hop-on hop-off bus and don’t want to pay much for it, and its studio coach and day trips are among the best-reviewed products in the city. The score is held back by thin winter frequencies and mixed hop-on hop-off ratings. For flexibility and a cruise in every ticket, see The Original Tour; for the best app and frequent buses, Big Bus.
