Harry Potter walking tours in London — the films’ city, on foot

A Harry Potter walk is a two-to-three-hour stroll past London filming locations for about £15–£22, not the Studio Tour with the sets. Here’s which experience you actually want, and which walks are worth booking.

Which Harry Potter experience in London do you actually want?

“Harry Potter London” covers four very different things, and a surprising number of people book the wrong one. A Harry Potter walking tour is a guided stroll past filming locations in central London. It is not the Studio Tour, where the sets are, and it is not the play.

If you only have time for one, the honest answer is the Studio Tour — it’s what most fans mean by “Harry Potter in London”. The walk is the cheaper, shorter add-on that fills an afternoon. Our Studio Tour guide compares the coach packages with going by train.

Prices are the “from” prices in our partner feed today; open the listing for your date. Outside the platforms, the independent Tour for Muggles sells its own two-hour group walk at £19 for adults and £17 for children, capped at 20 people, starting at Leadenhall Market and finishing near Borough Market. It also runs a private version (£150 booking fee plus £19 per adult) and an evening “Dark Arts” walk on Tuesdays.

The walks differ less in route than in length and showmanship. Most of them lean on the same backbone of locations — Leadenhall Market, which stood in for the streets around Diagon Alley; the Millennium Bridge, destroyed in Half-Blood Prince; Westminster and the Ministry of Magic scenes — and the longer ones add more stops and more of the films’ back story. Shorter walks suit kids.

Harry Potter tours in German and French

London gets a lot of German-speaking Harry Potter fans, and the “Harry Potter Drehorte London” crowd is well served: a dedicated German-language walk runs on GetYourGuide at about £20 for two and a half hours, rated 4.8★ from more than 2,100 reviews. A French-language walk is about £18. Both cover the same core locations as the English walks. For Spanish, Italian or any other language, or for a fixed date that suits you, a private Blue Badge guide can build a Potter route — at a per-group price.

Walk, bus or private cab?

  • Walk if you’re happy on your feet for two to three hours. It’s the cheapest option and the only one that goes into the alleys and markets.
  • Bus if you have children under about seven, or the forecast is grim. You see more locations, but you’re looking through a window for much of it.
  • Private cab if you’re a family of four or five — at about £318 per cab, it costs roughly the same per head as two bus-tour seats each, includes hotel pick-up and can stop at King’s Cross for the trolley photo. Our private Harry Potter page compares cab tours and private Studio transfers.

If Potter is part of a wider film-geek trip, our film and TV location tours page covers Sherlock, Bond and the rest, and the family private tours page lists formats that work with small children.

When to go and what to expect

Check the listing’s weather and cancellation policy before you book; London walks are outdoors for most of their length, so bring a jacket. The most-booked platform walks don’t all publish a group cap — if group size matters to you, choose one that states it (Tour for Muggles, for instance, says 20) or go private.

If you’re planning the Studio Tour on the same trip, book that first: the Studio doesn’t sell tickets on the day, and the walk is easy to fit around whatever date you get.

Questions people ask

Is a Harry Potter walking tour the same as the Studio Tour?
No. A walking tour takes you past real London places used in the films — Leadenhall Market, the Millennium Bridge, King’s Cross — and tells you the stories behind them, in two to three hours, for around £15–£22. The Warner Bros Studio Tour is out at Leavesden, near Watford, where you see the actual sets, props and costumes; it takes most of a day once you count travel. Many fans do both.
How much does a Harry Potter tour in London cost?
Shared walking tours on GetYourGuide list from about £15 to £22 per person, and the independent Tour for Muggles charges £19 for adults and £17 for children on its own site. Guided coach tours of the locations start at about £40. A private Harry Potter black cab is around £318 per cab for three to four hours, and the Studio Tour ticket alone is £58.50 for an adult.
Is there a Harry Potter walking tour in German?
Yes. A German-language Harry Potter walk runs on GetYourGuide — about two and a half hours, from around £20, rated 4.8★ from more than 2,100 reviews — and a French-language walk lists from about £18. If you’d rather book a guide privately in your own language, a Blue Badge guide is the other route; see our page on Blue Badge guides.
Can you visit Platform 9¾ for free?
Yes. The Platform 9¾ trolley and sign sit inside King’s Cross station next to the Harry Potter Shop, outside the ticket barriers, so you don’t need a train ticket. Taking your own photo is free; the shop sells professional photos. There’s often a queue for the trolley, so allow some time.
Is there a Harry Potter World or Harry Potter museum in London?
Not in central London. What people usually mean is the Warner Bros Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, at Leavesden near Watford — a self-guided walk through the real sets, not a theme park with rides. There’s no Wizarding World theme park in the UK; Universal’s planned resort in Bedfordshire is targeted for 2031 and hasn’t confirmed what it will contain.
Are the walks good for children?
For children who know the films, usually yes. Tour for Muggles says children aged five and up enjoy its walk and under-fives may struggle with the distance. Three hours is a long time for small legs; if that worries you, choose a shorter two-hour walk or the coach tour.
