Which Stonehenge tour from London should you book?

For most people, a Stonehenge tour from London is either a half day (the stones and straight back) or a full day that adds Bath, Windsor or Oxford. The half-day coaches with the entry ticket included are the cheapest way to see Stonehenge from London — cheaper, once you add the ticket, than the train and bus.

Most half-day tours give you the entry ticket and an audio guide rather than a live guide at the stones. That’s fine: the site is a walk around a path, and the visitor centre’s exhibition does the explaining. If you want someone telling the story all day, look for “guided” in the title — the Avebury tour is the clearest example.

How the DIY sum works: a return from Waterloo to Salisbury on a weekday in early November came up from about £22 to £36 on National Rail’s planner, depending on the train. The Stonehenge Tour’s booking site lists bus-only returns from £14 and bus-plus-Stonehenge-plus-Old-Sarum tickets from £29 — check the adult price for your date. Bought separately, Stonehenge entry is about £25–£29 for an adult booked ahead. On the day you’ll pay more for both train and entry.

How does Stonehenge inner circle access work?

On a normal ticket you walk a path around the stones, close but not among them. English Heritage’s Stone Circle Experience is the regular way inside the circle:

  • When: early morning or evening, outside normal opening hours, for about an hour, including a tour of the surrounding landscape.
  • Price: from £70 for adults and £40 for children aged 5–17; under-5s free.
  • Size: up to 52 people per session, split into two groups of 26 at the stones.
  • Rules: no touching or standing on the stones; photos are fine.
  • Availability: very limited, booking open to March 2027, and no sessions in October or November.

Getting there for a 7am or evening slot without a car is the hard part: the Stonehenge Tour bus timetable may not match your session. That’s why inner circle tours exist. The one in our feed adds Windsor and costs about £219 per person. Headout lists Stonehenge entry, inner circle access, an English-speaking guide and the coach as included, with Windsor Castle tickets as a paid extra. For a private car timed around your session, see private Stonehenge tours.

Combine Stonehenge with Bath, Windsor or Oxford?

  • Bath is the natural partner — another World Heritage Site and the Roman Baths. See Bath day trips.
  • Windsor pairs a working royal castle with prehistory — but it’s closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. See Windsor Castle tours.
  • Oxford adds a college town; see Oxford and Cambridge tours.
  • All three in one day is possible — the day trips hub explains the trade-off.

Questions people ask

How much is a Stonehenge tour from London?
In our partner feed today, half-day coach tours that include the entry ticket start at about £59 and the best-rated one is about £66. Stonehenge-and-Bath days run from about £55 to £85 depending on what’s included, Stonehenge with Windsor about £69, and the Avebury tour about £98. An inner circle tour with Windsor is about £219 per person.
Can you go inside the stone circle at Stonehenge?
Normal tickets keep you on a path around the stones. English Heritage’s Stone Circle Experience takes you inside the circle for about an hour, early in the morning or in the evening outside opening hours. It costs from £70 for adults and £40 for children aged 5–17, takes up to 52 people per session, and you still can’t touch the stones. There are no sessions in October or November.
How do I get from London to Stonehenge by train?
Take a South Western Railway train from Waterloo to Salisbury — about 1 hour 25 minutes direct. The Stonehenge Tour bus leaves from outside Salisbury station and takes about 35 minutes. On the winter timetable (from 7 September 2026) buses leave the station hourly from 10:05 to 14:05, and the last bus back from Stonehenge is at 17:15.
Is Stonehenge worth it?
If you know you’ll be underwhelmed by a ring of stones in a field, combine it with Bath or Windsor so the day isn’t one long drive for an hour on a path. The visitor centre’s exhibition helps a lot. People who love it usually go early or late — on a morning tour, or on the Stone Circle Experience, when the crowds are gone.
Do I need to book Stonehenge tickets in advance?
Yes, if you’re going on your own. English Heritage sells timed tickets online until midnight the day before at a lower price — about £25–£29 for an adult this season, depending on the day — while tickets on the day cost about £29–£34.50. English Heritage and National Trust (England) members get in free, and advance booking is recommended for everyone. Tours with entry included handle the ticket for you.
Stonehenge half day or full day?
A half-day tour (6–8 hours door to door) gets you to the stones and back, nothing more. A full day of about 11 hours adds Bath, Windsor or Oxford, often for only a few pounds more — one Bath combo is even cheaper than the half days. Pick the half day if you have other plans in London that afternoon; otherwise the combo is better value for the time spent on the motorway.
