Oxford day trip from London — tour, train, or both cities?

Oxford is 50 minutes from Paddington by train and Cambridge about the same from King’s Cross. Coach tours mostly bundle Oxford with Stonehenge, the Cotswolds or the Harry Potter studio; for one city on its own, the train usually wins.

Oxford day trip from London: tour or train?

For an Oxford day trip from London, the honest answer depends on what else you want to see. Oxford on its own is one of the easiest day trips in England: a 50-minute train from Paddington drops you a ten-minute walk from the centre, and the city is compact enough to cover on foot. Coach tours earn their price when you want to add something a train can’t easily reach, such as the Cotswold villages, Stonehenge or Blenheim, or when you’d rather someone else handled the planning.

Cambridge works the same way from King’s Cross. The one thing trains can’t do is link the two cities quickly, so a single day covering both is coach-tour territory.

Oxford or Cambridge: which is better for a day trip?

  • Oxford is bigger and busier, with more to see from the street. The Radcliffe Camera, the Bridge of Sighs and the Sheldonian are all free to look at, and Christ Church draws the Harry Potter crowds. It pairs naturally with the Cotswolds or Stonehenge on a coach day.
  • Cambridge is smaller, flatter and greener, with the Backs, punting on the Cam and King’s College Chapel (£15.75 online on a weekday). It’s the easier train day: walk or take a bus from the station, see the colleges, punt, and you’re back for dinner.
  • Both: only one tour in our feed combines them, and it’s the lowest-rated. If you have two free days, do one each by train.

If you’d like a car and your own route, perhaps Oxford with Blenheim or a Cotswold village lunch, our private day trips page compares driver-guides. Combined with Windsor it makes a full but manageable day. More rail-friendly ideas are on our day trips by train page.

Practical tips

  • Colleges close without much warning for exams (roughly May–June), graduations and private events. Check the college’s own page on the morning you go.
  • Off-peak matters. From Paddington, Off-Peak Day Returns are valid from about 9.20am on weekdays and all day at weekends. A peak Anytime return is £93.20.
  • Combo tours are long. Ten to eleven hours is normal, and much of it is on the M40 or M4. Bring water and a charged phone.
  • Admissions are usually extra on coach tours unless the title says “with admission”. Check the listing before you compare prices.

Questions people ask

How far is Oxford from London?
Oxford is roughly 55–60 miles north-west of central London. The fastest Great Western Railway trains from Paddington take about 50 minutes, and Chiltern Railways runs slower trains from Marylebone. By road it’s usually 1.5–2 hours each way depending on traffic, which is why coach tours that include Oxford run 10–11 hours.
How much is the train from London to Oxford?
An Off-Peak Day Return is £37.70 and an Anytime Day Return is £93.20, the same on GWR or Chiltern. Off-peak from Paddington starts around 9.20am on weekdays and runs all day at weekends. Regulated fares in England were frozen in 2026, so these Nov 2025 fares still apply, but check on the day. Advance singles can be cheaper on a specific train.
Can you do Oxford and Cambridge in one day from London?
Yes. There’s one tour in our feed that does both, at about £119 for 10 hours with guided walks in each city. Expect a lot of motorway, since the two cities are on opposite sides of London and the coach drives between them. By train it isn’t practical in a day, because there’s no fast direct link between Oxford and Cambridge.
Which Oxford colleges can you visit, and what does it cost?
Many colleges open to visitors at set times, some free and some charging. Christ Church, with its Great Hall and cathedral, is the most popular. Adult tickets are £22.95 on weekdays and £24.95 at weekends from 4 October to 12 December 2026, £2 less if booked ahead. Colleges close at short notice for exams and events, so check on the day.
Is a Cambridge day trip from London worth it?
Yes, and it’s easy by train. Non-stop services from King’s Cross take about 50 minutes, and slower trains run from Liverpool Street. Budget roughly £25–£35 for an off-peak day return and check on the day. King’s College Chapel costs £15.75 for an adult booked online on a weekday (£17 at the door), and punting on the Backs is the classic afternoon.
Is the Oxford Tube coach cheaper than the train?
Usually, yes. Stagecoach’s Oxford Tube runs from central London to Oxford day and night, up to every 12 minutes at busy times. Its fare table showed a return of £22.50 in the app or £28 on board (fares as of October 2025, so check the app). It takes noticeably longer than the train, at roughly 1.5–2 hours each way, and traffic decides.
