London to Dover and Canterbury: is a tour worth it?

For one place, no. Canterbury and Dover both sit on Southeastern’s high-speed line out of St Pancras, so a London to Dover or Canterbury day trip by train is quick and simple. A Super Off-Peak return to Canterbury costs less than half the cheapest coach tour.

The coach tour pays off when you want two or three places in one day: Canterbury Cathedral, the White Cliffs, and sometimes Leeds Castle. The rail connections between them are fiddly, and the cliffs are a climb from Dover station. At about £79 for Canterbury and the cliffs, a tour costs roughly what one person would spend on high-speed rail plus the cathedral, with the logistics done for you.

  • Cliffs and cathedral, first visit: the £79 Dover and Canterbury tour is the best-reviewed and cheapest.
  • Castles: Leeds Castle is the draw. Its moat, gardens, birds of prey and little train suit families, and it’s an easy train ride on its own from Victoria.
  • History buffs: Dover Castle’s wartime tunnels deserve half a day. Do it by train on a day when you aren’t also trying to see Canterbury.

If you’re weighing Kent against other castles, Windsor is far closer. For more train-friendly ideas, see day trips by train. If the coast is what you’re after, the Seven Sisters cliffs in Sussex are covered on our UK multi-day and coast page. For crossing the Channel itself, see Paris and Europe day trips.

Practical tips

  • Canterbury Cathedral hours: 10am–5pm Monday to Saturday (last entry 4pm). On Sundays the church opens from 12.30pm. Services and events can close parts of it.
  • Leeds Castle in autumn: until 19 November 2026, the grounds open 10am–5pm and the castle 10.30am–3.30pm, with last entry 3pm. The Black Swan ferry stops after October.
  • Wind on the cliffs: the White Cliffs path is exposed and unfenced in places. Wear proper shoes and keep children close.
  • Tour admissions vary: some Kent tours include the cathedral or castle, others don’t. Compare like with like.

Questions people ask

How far is Dover from London?
Dover is about 77 miles south-east of central London by road. By train, Southeastern’s high-speed services from St Pancras reach Dover Priory in about 1 hour 3–7 minutes, with around 42 direct trains a day. Slower trains run from Victoria and Charing Cross. Coach tours take two hours or more each way, depending on traffic and stops.
How do I get to the White Cliffs of Dover from London?
Take the train to Dover Priory, then walk or take a taxi to the National Trust’s White Cliffs visitor centre above the eastern docks. There’s no admission charge to walk onto the cliffs, and the clifftop viewpoint is about 400 metres from the car parks. Parking is £6 a car. From there, the walk to South Foreland Lighthouse is the classic route.
How much is the train from London to Canterbury?
Southeastern’s published fares are £32 for a Super Off-Peak Day Return, or £43.10 including high-speed. An Off-Peak Day Return is £41.20, or £49.50 with high-speed. Super Off-Peak is valid after 10am on weekdays and all day at weekends. These are 2025 fares, and regulated fares in England were frozen in 2026, but check on the day. Advance singles on a specific train can be cheaper.
Can you do Canterbury and Dover in one day by train?
Yes. Canterbury East and Dover Priory are on the same line, so you can do Canterbury in the morning, Dover and the cliffs in the afternoon, and return on the high-speed line. It takes more planning than a coach tour and usually costs more for one person, but you choose how long to spend at each.
How do you get to Leeds Castle from London?
Direct Southeastern trains from London Victoria reach Bearsted or Hollingbourne in about 70–75 minutes. From there it’s a five-minute taxi or a 30–40 minute walk. The 510 bus stops inside the grounds on Saturdays. Show a same-day train ticket at the visitor centre for 20% off admission.
How much does it cost to visit Canterbury Cathedral and Leeds Castle?
Canterbury Cathedral charges adults £18 from October to March, £19.50 from April to September, and £21 at weekends in July and August. Leeds Castle’s Explorer ticket is £34.50 for an adult online, and the Ultimate Explorer is £45.50. Dover Castle (English Heritage) is cheaper booked online than on the day. Check the listing to see which admissions a tour includes.
