Cotswolds tours from London — villages without the car hire

The Cotswolds is the one classic day trip from London that’s genuinely awkward without wheels. A small-group tour costs about £70–£130 and gets you to three or four villages; here’s how they compare, and how to do it by train and bus instead.

Which Cotswolds tour from London is best?

The best Cotswolds tour from London depends on how much else you want in the day. Villages-only small-group tours give you the most time in Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow; combos with Oxford, Blenheim or Stratford trade village time for a city or a palace.

Prices are today’s “from” prices in our partner feed, per person. Admissions — Blenheim, Warwick Castle, Oxford colleges — are often extra; read the inclusions.

Two things are worth checking before you compare prices. First, the meeting point: the seven-stop tour starts at Paddington, while others board elsewhere in central London, and an early start across town eats into the morning. Second, the stop list: tours with similar names visit different villages, and a “Cotswolds” day that also covers Warwick, Oxford and Stratford leaves much less time in the villages themselves.

The train fare is the cheapest return National Rail’s planner showed on morning direct trains from Paddington for a Thursday in early November (about £46–£50), searched two weeks ahead. Pulhams’ 801 runs between Moreton-in-Marsh station, Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water, hourly on Sundays all year; since May 2026 the last bus from Moreton station leaves at 21:40 on Mondays to Saturdays.

Is a small group worth it over a big coach?

In the Cotswolds, usually yes. The lanes are narrow and the villages small, and a minibus can usually stop in more of them than a full-size coach. The three-village coach day is cheaper and lets you wander on your own, but it scores lower than the small-group tours in our feed (4.3★ against 4.8★ for the best). Group sizes vary: Rabbie’s caps its mini-coaches at 16, and an Anderson Tours Cotswolds trip on Tiqets lists a maximum of 19. The cheaper three-village “group tour” is a coach day.

Combine the Cotswolds with Oxford, Bath or Blenheim?

  • Oxford is the most common pairing — see Oxford and Cambridge tours.
  • Blenheim Palace adds a palace and parkland; Palace, Park and Gardens tickets cost £41 online for an adult.
  • Bath and Lacock sit on the southern edge of the Cotswolds; see Bath day trips.
  • Stonehenge is a separate day for most people — see Stonehenge tours.

If you’re four or more, compare a private Cotswolds day — at about £130 each it’s within reach of the dearer small-group tours. For other easy escapes by rail, see day trips by train, and the day trips hub for everything else.

Questions people ask

What is the best Cotswolds tour from London?
On volume and rating, the full-day small-group tour with 5,300+ reviews at 4.8★ is the safe pick. If you want more stops for less, the seven-stop small-group day from Paddington is about £70. Choose an Oxford or Blenheim combo only if you want those too — every extra stop means less time in the villages.
Can you visit the Cotswolds from London without a car?
Yes, if you keep it to the north-east corner. Direct trains from Paddington reach Moreton-in-Marsh in about 1 hour 25 minutes, and Pulhams’ 801 bus links Moreton station with Stow-on-the-Wold and Bourton-on-the-Water. It runs hourly on Sundays all year. Bibury, Burford and Castle Combe aren’t on that route and are much harder by public transport — that’s where tours earn their money.
How much is a Cotswolds day trip from London?
In our partner feed today, Cotswolds coach and small-group days run from about £70 to £129 per person, Oxford-and-Cotswolds days from about £79 to £97, and Cotswolds with Blenheim Palace about £79. A private car starts around £520 per vehicle. By train, a weekday return to Moreton-in-Marsh came up from about £46 booked two weeks ahead.
How big are small-group Cotswolds tours?
It varies more than the label suggests. Rabbie’s caps its mini-coaches at 16 and an Anderson Tours Cotswolds trip on Tiqets lists a maximum of 19, while “group tour” listings can use full-size coaches. If group size matters, check the maximum on the listing before you book.
Which Cotswold villages do tours visit?
The usual circuit is Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water, Burford and Stow-on-the-Wold, with Broadway Tower on some routes. The three-village coach day visits Burford, Bibury and Bourton; the Harry Potter tour goes to Lacock instead. Castle Combe turns up on some routes from Bath.
Cotswolds and Oxford, or Cotswolds and Blenheim Palace?
Oxford adds a walk past the colleges in the city centre; Blenheim adds a palace and a huge park. Palace, Park and Gardens tickets at Blenheim cost £41 online or £44 on site for an adult, so check whether the tour includes them — and whether you’d rather spend those hours in the villages.
