Which day trip from London, and how far is it?

The best day trips from London fall into two groups. Windsor, Oxford, Cambridge and Brighton are an hour or less by train and easy to do on your own. Stonehenge and the Cotswolds are harder without wheels, which is why most people take a coach tour — often combined with Bath, Windsor or Oxford to make the long drive worth it.

Coach tour, train or private driver?

  • Coach tour — about £55–£85 per person for two or three sights, a guide on board and, often, entry tickets. You’ll spend much of an 11-hour day on a full-size coach. Best for Stonehenge and for ticking off several places at once.
  • Small group — often capped at 16–19 people in a minibus, for £70–£130. The Cotswolds is where it earns its premium: minibuses fit the lanes and stop in more villages.
  • Train — the cheapest and most flexible for one destination with sights near the station. Advance and off-peak tickets are far cheaper than buying at the station on the day. Our day trips by train guide has the fares.
  • Private car — from about £420 per vehicle for a ten-hour day. It only beats the coach on price from about four people, but it’s the one way to do Stonehenge at your own pace, stay longer in Bath, or see three Cotswold villages before the coaches arrive. See private day trips.

Who runs day tours from London?

Many of the coach day trips sold on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets are run by a handful of London operators. Knowing who they are helps you compare like with like.

  • Golden Tours — established in 1984, family-run and a member of Gray Line. It runs the widest range of coach days — Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor, Oxford, the Cotswolds — and lists its Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath day from about £71 on its own site, in line with the platform prices.
  • Evan Evans Tours — sells direct at evanevanstours.com (the old evanevans.co.uk address redirects there), with Stonehenge, Cotswolds, Bath, Oxford and Windsor days, small-group trips and longer rail tours.
  • Premium Tours — Stonehenge from Victoria (a half day with fish and chips from about £60), Stonehenge and Bath from £85, and a Cotswolds lunch tour in Bibury from £99, on its own site.
  • International Friends — small-group and private day trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Windsor, Oxford and the Cotswolds, with pick-ups in central London, at Heathrow and at the Southampton and Dover cruise terminals.
  • Anderson Tours — small-group Cotswolds days, including a Broadway Tower route listed with a maximum group of 19.
  • Rabbie’s — 16-seat mini-coaches only; its Stonehenge day leaves from Victoria. Better known for Scotland and multi-day UK tours.

Booking through a platform gets you one support desk, verified reviews and, on many listings, free cancellation — but the cancellation window varies by listing, so read it rather than assuming 24 hours.

Further afield

Paris in a day by Eurostar is possible and runs to 14–15 hours. For Downton Abbey fans, check Highclere Castle’s opening dates before planning around it. And if the day trip is really for the Harry Potter studios in Leavesden, see our Warner Bros. Studio Tour guide.

Questions people ask

What is the best day trip from London?
For first-timers, Stonehenge plus Bath is the classic — two World Heritage Sites in one day, and the best-rated coach version has 3,000+ reviews at 4.8★. If you’d rather wander somewhere pretty, the best-rated big seller in our feed is a small-group Cotswolds tour (4.8★ from 5,300+ reviews). For the least travelling, Windsor Castle is about half an hour away by train.
How much does a day trip from London cost?
In our partner feed today, coach day trips run from about £39 (Windsor with transport) to about £85 (Stonehenge and Bath with entry), and small-group Cotswolds tours from about £70 to £129. Private cars start around £420 per vehicle. Check what’s included — some prices cover admission, others don’t.
Is it cheaper to do a day trip by train?
Not always. Booked about two weeks ahead, a weekday return to Bath on a direct train came up from about £50 on National Rail’s planner, before the Roman Baths. For Stonehenge, train plus bus plus ticket usually costs more than a half-day coach tour with entry included. The train wins for Windsor, Oxford and Cambridge, where the sights are walkable from the station.
Can you do Windsor, Stonehenge and Bath in one day?
Yes — coach tours do exactly that in about 11–12 hours, and it’s the most-booked day trip from London. The trade-off is time: you get a short look at each place and a lot of motorway. If you have two days, split it — Windsor by train one day, Stonehenge and Bath the next.
Where do day tours from London leave from?
Most coach tours board in central London, early in the morning. Premium Tours’ half-day Stonehenge trip and Rabbie’s Stonehenge day both leave from Victoria, while at least one small-group Cotswolds tour starts at Paddington. Meeting points differ even between tours from the same company, so check the listing and allow time to find the coach. Private tours collect you from your hotel.
Who is Star Tours?
Star Tours is an escorted group-holiday company selling coach breaks, flight holidays and Eurostar tours, and it states ABTA and ATOL protection. It isn’t a sightseeing day-trip operator in the same sense as Golden Tours or Evan Evans, so if you’re looking for a one-day Stonehenge or Cotswolds trip, compare the tours on this page instead.
